Central Region: Nature, History and Culture

Cuba's central region, with strong components of nature, history and culture, provides tourist options that are increasingly gaining ground among domestic and foreign vacationers.

In Sancti Spiritus stands out Trinidad, known as the Village of the Holy Trinity and Cuba's Museum City, and has the privilege of being one of the country's colonial cities and holds one of the best-preserved and most-complete architectural complexes in the American continent.

Large, comfortable and aired colonial mansions and palaces where luxury and waste prevailed to integrate into Cuban colonial art, turn the city into a unique urban and architectural crown jewel.

Near Trinidad is the Ancón Peninsula, which is bathed by the Caribbean Sea and is considered to hold the best beaches along Cuba's south coast.

The sea bottoms, with large populations of black coral, can be explored in a score of diving sites, some of which are close to Cayo Blanco.

In addition, the region's mountains are available in the Escambray, where the Topes de Collantes National Park is located at 800 feet above sea level, accompanied by the Caburní Waterfall.

South of the city of Santa Clara, the capital of Villa Clara province, lies the Cubanacán Protected Area, a true natural paradise and a safe haven for amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds, including ten species that make up the catalog of Cuba's endemic species.

A causeway over the sea connects the largest island of the Cuban archipelago with the keys Santa María, Las Brujas, Ensenachos, Cobos, Majá, Fragoso, Francés, Las Picúas and Español de Adentro, among others.

Nature itself has created the conditions for tourism, including a coral reef that allows reducing the effect of waves on the beaches, thus creating a one-of-the-kind scenario for thousands of tourists every year.

The region's singular touch is provided by San Juan de los Remedios, one of the first villages founded by the Spanish conquistadors in Cuba.

The starting point of the historic heart of Remedios, which was declared a National Monument in 1980, is the current José Martí Square, formerly known as Park of the Parish or of Elizabeth II, and flanked by beautiful flamboyant trees and buildings from that period, like the house of the Royal Second Lieutenant and the House of Arcades.

In Villa Clara is also the Hanabanilla Lake, the only intra-mountainous lake in Cuba to which the rivers Negro, Hanabanilla and Guanayara contribute, and an excellent place for nature enthusiasts.

Also in central Cuba is the city of Cienfuegos, the capital of the province of the same name and known as the Pearl of the South, where tourists can stay in hotels like Jagua, Pasacaballos and Rancho Luna.

The region is also known for its singular nature, with old sites like the Botanic Gardens, founded in 1901. It covers an area of 97 hectares and it holds the world's most complete collection of palm trees.

Nature enthusiasts can visit El Nicho through an ascending road in the Guamuaya Mountain Range that goes through the Yaguanabo River, and the breathtakingly-beautiful view of the waterfall in the creek El Negro.
