Holguin: A Growing Tourist Destination

Holguin province, in the eastern part of the nation, stands as a dynamically expanding tourist destination in Cuba's tourism industry, backed by its unique natural treasures and diversity of unique resting places. The territory also holds Bariay location, the exact point where Christopher Columbus first stepped in Cuban soil during the process of finding a new route to the Indies. According to legend, the view of the stunning countryside, with pristine beaches and vegetation exuberance led him to say "This is the most beautiful land that human eyes have ever seen." The geography of Holguin is home to a dozen major cities, including Banes -considered the archeological capital of Cuba- and Gibara, the latter much more attractive due to its excellent preservation of original Iberian colonial architecture. Regarding tourism, there are several beaches zones available, plenty keys, parks and outdoor options, with special emphasis on sites like Guardalavaca, Estero Ciego, Esmeralda and Don Lino, among many others. Cayo Naranjo excels within the unique leisure proposals in the area, which also provides the surprise of finding an aquarium in the sea. Located in the bay of the same name, the center has access only through fast boats that transport visitors from the nearby coast, summoned by the pleasure of contemplating the most diverse marine species and even enjoy a refreshing swim with some of them. Over 30 km of coastline with five natural beaches, archaeological sites, caves and pristine keys are all part of an offer that counts with an extra six km coral reef, an excellent choice for diving. Holguin also contains the ruins of the Spanish fortifications that protected the cities of the siege of pirates and privateers, attracted by the wealth of the colony. It has about 60 kilometers of beaches, large and small, who run on the Atlantic coast, many of them able to compete in beauty and clarity of its waters with the most famous worldwide. The capital city also has its charms in a real mix of Spanish architecture, American type chalet style houses, with suburbs attached to a traditional culture, with a truly Hispanic American character. For ecotourism lovers is noteworthy the exclusive attractions of the areas near Sierra Cristal, where unique Cuban flora are located such coconut palms, tropical fruit, ferns and trees of precious woods. The divers can enjoy a rare option in Tanque Azul Caletones, a flooded cave situated in one of the most important route of migratory birds in the region. Valleys and hills combine with exceptional vegetation and fauna that shows the national bird Tocororo (Cuban trogon), accompanied by woodpeckers, parrots, Cuban parakeets, macaws, conga hutias and even wild horses.
