Varadero: A Treasure on the Beaches

The traditional sun and beach options in the Cuban archipelago have as an element to highlight in Varadero, in the western province of Matanzas.

Its privileged geographical location in Cuba, in an area of warm crystal-clear waters, together with the existence of extensive sand strips, constitute a complement to this modality, especially for the summer season.

Undoubtedly, the quality of the coastal resort leads it to aspire to the condition of Best Beach in the World in 2020, in a process that requires everyone's support for cleaning the streets and green areas.

For this, it is proposed to place the garbage in deposits such as baskets, bags and containers, use the parking areas for vehicles and walk on foot to the beach accesses, as well as removing food waste and used containers, removing cigarette butts in the sand, taking care and keeping the environment clean, and avoiding damaging or cutting any species of plant in the dune.

With a score of kilometers of excellent beaches, Varadero has 52 hotels, 83 percent of which are managed by foreign chains.

In Varadero stage, leading companies such as Spain's Melia, Iberostar and Globalia, or Canada's Blue Diamond, come together.

It also has a theme park as part of the actions to improve offers for both foreign and domestic vacationers.

Although only one 18-hole golf course operates in Varadero, there are plans to build three other such facilities, the first of which will be under construction in 2020.

Together with this, sand pouring is carried out periodically with a view to maintaining the beach strip and the most recent project in that direction will focus on the six most important sectors of the resort.

A total of 1.5 million cubic meters of sand will be poured in a first phase.

Varadero's seabed has more than 40 types of corals, diversity of fish, lobsters, shrimp, crabs, turtles and more than 70 types of mollusks.

Likewise, marinas such as Chapelin, Darsena de Varadero and Gaviota guarantee the conditions and means for scuba diving and snorkeling, with appropriate boats, trained personnel, diving teaching centers, hyperbaric chambers and the necessary transportation for any emergency.

Meanwhile, diving has its main course in the so-called Hoyo Azul Ojo del Megano, a huge cavern that is 70 meters in diameter, with submerged walls, coral reefs and huge schools of multicolored fish.

Nature proudly shows the more than 300 hectares of Punta de Hicacos, with aboriginal pictographs in the Ambrosio Cave and the ruins of La Calavera saltworks, which is considered the first to be exploited in the Americas by the Spaniards during the colonial rule.

Among Varadero's attractions is the house of rum, where visitors can learn about the history of Cuban drinks.
