Havana.- The Cuban Grand Master (GM) Leinier Domínguez won the national chess championship for the 4th time, after defeating Lázaro Bruzón 1.5-0.5.
The GM Yuniesky Quesada (with an ELO score of 2,625 points) won the 3rd position after winning the second of the two 15-minute-tiebreak matches against Isán Ortiz (2,527), since the first match ended in a draw.
Dominguez won the national title in 2002, 2003 and 2006, while Bruzón won in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010.
The Cuban national championship had an initial qualifying stage which included 20 chess players where Ortiz won the competition against the FIDE Master Elier Miranda.
The Cuban championship was also a preparatory event for the chess Olympiad in Turkey in late August, where Cuba will send women’s and men’s teams composed of five players each.
