Peculiar Sculpture in Central Cuba
Monday, September 1, 2014

Havana.- The coastal city of Caibarién, in central Cuba, welcomes visitors with a peculiar sculpture that represents a huge crustacean.

The sculpture, called "El Gran Cangrejo" (The Big Crab), was created by Cuban artist Florencio Gelabert and was installed in the city in 1983.

Made of concrete and erected on a mound of rocks, the sculpture shows the relationship between those sea animals, which have a reddish shell, and the residents of the coastal city, located in the Bay of Buena Vista, across from the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago.

The species was a source of income for the town's residents, who commercialized it on the domestic and international markets, but its population has decreased due to excessive capture and the negative effects of climate change.
