Low Infant Mortality Rate in Holguín
Monday, September 29, 2014

Havana.- The eastern Cuban province of Holguín has reported an infant mortality rate of 4.9 deaths per every 1,000 live births from January to date.

Local health authorities pointed out that four municipalities (Antilla, Cueto, Urbano Noris and Frank País) have reported zero deaths during the said period.

In that regard, they mentioned the specialized follow-up on pregnant women who suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus or risks of abortion.

In addition, the mother-child program in the province operates with a multidisciplinary team made up of gynecologists, pediatricians, psychologists and nutritionists, who treat children who are born underweight.

In 2013, Cuba reported an infant mortality rate of 4.2 deaths per every 1,000 live births, one of the lowest rates in the world.
