Ciego de Avila Team Leads Cuban Baseball Tournament

Havana.- The team from Ciego de Avila is leading the National Baseball Championship after one-third of games of the initial round have been played.

The leading team, which has won 11 games and lost four, is followed by Las Tunas (9-5), Artemisa, Industriales and Matanzas (9-6 each), Granma (7-5), Guantánamo and Villa Clara (8-7 each).

Outside the qualification zone to the second stage of the tournament are the teams from Sancti Spíritus (7-7), Holguín, Isla de la Juventud and Santiago de Cuba (7-8 each).

The teams from Cienfuegos (6-9), the defending champion Pinar del Río (4-8), Camagüey (5-10) and Mayabeque (3-12) follow next.

The tournament consists of a 45-game all-around stage, after which the top eight teams will qualify for the next 42-game phase.
