Cuba Produces Food for Celiac Patients
Monday, February 23, 2015

Havana.- Cuba is producing special food for celiac patients, as part of actions to guarantee people's good health.

The plant, located in the central province of Cienfuegos, has supplied 17 tons of corn starch for that purpose, thus meeting the country's demand in the first two months of the year.

The industry supplies that product in five- and ten-kilogram bags to 1,762 Cuban celiac patients, who need to consume gluten-free cereals.

In addition, researchers are studying other nutritional options for celiac patients considering the potentialities of corn and sorghum starch.

Celiac patients are intolerant to the proteins of gluten, which is present in wheat, barley and rye, which causes an inflammatory reaction in the mucous of the small intestine.
