Natural Wealth of Guatemala Highlighted
Monday, February 23, 2015

Guatemala.- The Maya Biosphere Reserve of Guatemala, in the department of Petén, stands out for its natural wealth consisting of more than 2,800 species of plants and 792 of animals.

Covering an area of 21,602 square kilometers, the reserve was declared the largest protected area in Guatemala and Mesoamerica 25 years ago.

The reserve holds the largest tropical forest in Central America, in addition to 200 archeological sites, like the ancestral city of Tikal, which is visited by more than 120,000 tourists every year.

In addition, the Guatemala Tourism Institute has 300 guides who promoted the Maya Biosphere Reserve as a tourist destination linked to the environment.

Experts noted that the reserve also holds 13 percent of all freshwater reservoirs and some of the main tourist destinations in Guatemala.
