Cuba's Emblematic Work of Engineering Repaired
Monday, March 23, 2015

Havana.- The bridge of Bacunayagua, an emblematic work of civil engineering, benefited from a program of maintenance that cost three million pesos.

The construction of the viaduct, which connects Havana with the northern region of Matanzas province, started in 1956 and was carried out by a team of Cuban engineers. The bridge was officially inaugurated three years later.

Held by pillars with elegant arcades, the bridge is 314 meters long and 16 meters wide, in addition to being the highest bridge in Cuba.

The maintenance works allowed recovering the bridge's initial capacity and guaranteeing security for another 20 years without the need of capital repair.

The maintenance works started in 2011 to repair the vertical elements (arcades) and gradually continued with the pillars, boards and arches.
