Cultural and Historic Values of Céspedes Park Highlighted
Monday, March 30, 2015

Havana.- The Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Park, in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, stands out for its cultural and historic values and the services provided to local residents.

Known in previous centuries as Arms Square, Constitution Square and Queen's Square, the park is surrounded by major institutions from the Spanish-colonial period, including the town council, the Holy Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral Church and the houses of prominent people like Governor Diego Velázquez.

According to history, the park was used for the Spanish troops to carry out military exercises, pay tribute to the Spanish monarchs, proclaim royal orders and hold religious festivities and processions that departed from the Cathedral Church.

The park currently holds open-air performances by the provincial band of concerts, street plays and recitals, among other cultural events.
