Positive Trend in Cuban Tobacco Production

Havana.- The farmers of Pinar del Río, the westernmost of the Cuban provinces, are betting on a tobacco production of excellence thanks to the increase of the areas planted.

The objective is to reach 18,318 hectares planted, a figure higher than the one initially expected in the period, thanks to favorable weather conditions.

Specialists of the group Tabacuba stated that works with already known varieties of tobacco are being carried, in addition to experiments with the denominated Corojo 2012 and Criollo 2010.

The cure is superior in the current competition, the solanaceas acquires the required concentrations, the drying process is doing well and the plants show an adequate development.

Regarding the covered tobacco, from which the exportable layers are obtained, 806 hectares were cultivated and the first volumes are processed in controlled cure houses.

The forecasts for the 2016-2017 harvest aim to reach a figure close to 19,000 tons, one of the highest in the last decade.
