Genetics for Health in Eastern Cuba
Monday, February 20, 2017

Havana.- The Guantánamo Genetics Center, in the east of the island, guarantees the care of about 6,000 pregnant women and 5,000 children in 2016.

Two dozen specialists from the institution achieved in the referred period the early detection of dozens of congenital malformations incompatible with life.

With more than a decade of experience, its work allowed the infant mortality indicators to be kept low.

Several lines of work integrated to the national program of medical genetics determine the operation of a center called for the diagnosis, management and prevention of diseases and congenital anomalies.

These areas of intervention include prenatal genetic risk and neural tube blemishes, as well as the detection of sickle cell anemia.
