Recovered Crops in Eastern Cuba
Monday, April 24, 2017

Havana.- The Cuban agricultural sector is working on the recovery of cocoa, coffee and coconut plantations in the eastern municipality of Baracoa, affected by Hurricane Matthew.

The phenomenon caused important damages in the crops, since more than one million coconut trees and about 3,600 hectares of cacao were lost.

So far, some 2,000 hectares of cocoa plantations have been recovered, together with the rehabilitation of the benefit and processing centers.

In the case of the coconut, of the 6,408 hectares existing in Baracoa until the passage of the hurricane, 90 percent was lost when the plantations were demolished without possibility of recovery.

At least five years are required to reach the planned planting areas, to which are added new lines of work with export options.
