Western Cuba Produces Charcoal
Monday, May 15, 2017

Havana.- Pinar del Rio, Cuba's westernmost province, will start producing charcoal for the international market.

In order to produce that fuel, which will be commercialized under the Maracubá brand, sickle bush will be used as the raw material.

Cuba's major clients are Spain, Germany and Saudi Arabia, and they are expected to import 640 tons of charcoal altogether.

The municipalities of the so-called rice-producing region in Pinar de Rio will supply the sickle bush cut down by brigades of charcoal producers in areas of the Grassroots Entrepreneurial Units.

Since Man discovered fire, charcoal has been used, as the remaining pieces of burned wood in the bonfires cam be considered rudimentary charcoal.
