Cuban Children with Hearing Damage Tested
Monday, May 15, 2017

Havana.- The healthcare system in the western Cuban province of Matanzas will test children to detect hearing problems in newborns.

The program will allow checking the hearing of all children 24 hours after birth thanks to a new technology that will be used in the process.

Hearing problems will be detected in an early stage without waiting for the symptoms to appear later at home or during a medical consult.

The test will consist of registering the activity of the internal ear's cells in response to a stimulus caused by equipment of otaccoustic emissions.

The early diagnosis influences on vital aspect for development such as language and the intellect, in addition to allow providing early rehabilitation through prostheses or cochlear implants.
