Cuba Expands Maternal Milk Banks
Monday, May 22, 2017

Havana.- Cuba's healthcare system will expand to ten its network of maternal milk banks, after a new center of that kind is inaugurated.

That initiative is supported by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Brazilian Cooperation Agency and the Ibero-American Program of Human Milk Banks.

Cuban authorities are also working on the incorporation of donating mothers to benefit all newborns who need that food, which is collected and processed following the required hygiene standards.

That way, the optimal nutrition of premature newborns and those weighing less than 1,500 grams at birth will be guaranteed.

Maternal milk must be the exclusive food for babies during the first six months of life and they can continue consuming it until they are two years of age.
