Cultural and Historic Values of Cuban Pharmacy Highlighted
Monday, June 19, 2017

Havana.- The Pharmaceutical Museum in Matanzas, in western Cuba, is promoting its documentary collection to apply for the World Heritage condition granted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Officials from that institution noted that the museum is the only French pharmacy from the late 19th century that exists in the world and was designated a National Monument.

Founded by Doctors Juan Fermín Figueroa and Ernesto Triolet, both pharmacists, the building housing the pharmacy is an exponent of neoclassic architecture from the late 19th century.

It is worth mentioning that 55 volumes containing more than 1.5 million formulas from traditional and natural medicine were scanned.

During its years as a pharmacy, more than 150 formulas were prepared, including syrups, tinctures, creams, essences, elixirs, unguents and pills.
