Increased Use of Alternative Energies in Cuba
Monday, July 17, 2017

Havana.- The eastern Cuban province of Granma will have three photovoltaic parks, which are under construction, to increase the use of alternative energy.

One of the facilities will have a generation capacity of 2.2 megawatts and will be built mainly with Cuban components, while the two other plants will supply 4.4 megawatts each.

These actions are part of a program to make better use of renewable energy sources, as a result of which 11 zones have been identified to develop that kind of project on Cuban territory.

The parks will allow Cuba to increase six-fold its contribution of that kind of energy to the National Power Grid, thus saving the country about 21,000 tons of fossil fuel.

Granma also benefits from the operation of more than 1,000 windmills, about 250 biogas processors and 1,800 solar panels in houses and institutions in faraway areas.
