Cuban Theater Restored
Monday, July 24, 2017

Havana.- The Jose Jacinto Milanes Theater, in Cuba's westernmost province, Pinar del Rio, is recovering its original splendor that dates to 1838.

The 540-seat theater also has a Seville-style patio with a stage that can sit 120 spectators for coffee-concerts, and a bar-cafeteria.

Considered one of the oldest in Latin America, the theater hosted performances by Cuban prominent artists like Alicia Alonso and the National Ballet of Cuba, Bola de Nieve, Rita Montaner and Rosita Fornés.

In 1991, the theater was closed due to constructive problems and was reopened in 2006, after capital restoration during which light, air-conditioning and audio systems were replaced.

The restoration and decoration of the theater is being made by the painter and restorer Julio César Banasco, who assumed that work again.
