Monday, August 7, 2017
Havana.- Cuba's healthcare system reported a decrease in the infant mortality rate at the end of the first semester of 2017, as a result of the implementation of prevention programs.
According to official statistics, the infant mortality rate was 4.1 deaths per every 1,000 live births, thanks to several actions, including the promotion of breast feeding.
That result accounts for 44 fewer deaths of children under one year of age in contrast to the same period in 2016, in addition to a decrease in children's deaths due to perinatal infections, lung hemorrhage and acquired sepsis.
In the same period, the maternal death rate dropped to 37.8 per every 100,000 live births, meaning that nine fewer mothers died compared to the first semester of 2016.
Experts noted the importance of neonatology services throughout the country, as they maintain the survival of newborns at 99.2 percent.
