Cuba Promotes Breast Feeding to Improve Children's Health
Monday, August 7, 2017

Havana.- Cuba's healthcare sector is promoting breast feeding as an essential element to prevent diseases in children.

According to experts, children fed with maternal milk during the first six months of life develop key zones of the brain and make a superior cognitive progress.

In Cuba's case, 33 percent of children receive maternal milk as the only food until they are six months old, thus the importance of promoting that option.

Cuba has nine human milk banks that guarantee that food to newborns who cannot receive it from their mothers, have undergone surgery, are premature babies or were underweight at birth, among other factors.

It should be said that in 2016, 2 percent of children born in Cuba received their food from human milk banks.
