Christ of Havana Is a New National Monument
Monday, November 13, 2017

Havana.- Cuban authorities declared the emblematic statue of the Christ of Havana, created by the sculptor Jilma Madera, a National Monument.

The 20-meter-tall sculpture is made of some 300 tons of marble and was erected 50 meters above sea level on La Cabaña Hill.

The Commission of Monuments took into consideration the exceptional artistic values of the sculpture, which became a landmark in the bay's landscape and a popular icon.

Madera, who died in 2000, also created the bust of Jose Marti that is on the Turquino Peak in eastern Cuba.

The work on the Christ of Havana lasted two years, during which the artist sent 67 pieces of the sculpture from Italy.
