Underwater Heritage on Debate in Eastern Cuba
Monday, June 18, 2018

Havana.- The eastern city of Santiago de Cuba will host Simposub 2018, an event dedicated to the conservation of the underwater natural and cultural heritage.

On this occasion, the event will be dedicated to the 120 years of the Spanish-Cuban-American War and the naval battle on July 3, 1898, in the bay of Santiago de Cuba.

In that conflict, the United States fleet annihilated the Spanish fleet, led by Admiral Pascual Cervera and Topete, whose ships are sunk on the seabed.

In addition, objects such as masts, ironwork, part of the artillery and projectiles are submerged in the area, which form the Naval Battle Archaeological Park of Santiago de Cuba.

The program includes a commemorative cultural event, a ceremony honoring the fallen sailors, tours of historic sites and a visit to the project "My Heritage, the Sea".
