National Ballet of Cuba Declared Cultural Heritage
Monday, July 9, 2018

Havana.- The National Ballet of Cuba (BNC), directed by prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, was declared a Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

The resolution from the Ministry of Culture acknowledges the long history of the company and the prestige gained with its presentations all over the world.

In this way, the company is the ultimate expression of the Cuban ballet school, which has achieved its own physiognomy where the tradition of theatrical dance merges with the essential features of the National Culture.

Founded in 1948 by Maestro Fernando Alonso and Alicia Alonso, the BNC is from its very beginning a reference par excellence of classic dance in Cuba, with an experience of seven decades of uninterrupted work.

The history of the group, apart from Alonso herself, also involves prominent figures such as the four jewels: Loipa Araujo, Mirta Plá, Josefina Méndez and Aurora Bosch.
