Havana.- Cuba finished in second place by countries in the 23rd edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games held in Barranquilla, Colombia.
The Cuban delegation closed its performance with 102 gold medals, only preceded by Mexico, which won 130 gold medals, while Colombia was in the third place.
Experts attributed Cuba's result, lower than expected, to the high level of Mexican athletes and the fall of Colombia and Venezuela in some sports.
In addition, Cuban sports authorities pointed out that 66.6 percent of the delegation competed at that level for the first time.
In that regard, Cuba excelled in sports like fencing, cycling, boxing, field hockey, water polo and men's handball, among others.
