Increased Fruit Tree Crops in Ciego de Avila |
|
|
Monday, August 20, 2018
Havana.- The agricultural sector in the eastern Cuban province of Ciego de Avila has reported an increase in citrus and fruit trees, with 9,500 hectares planted to date.
This achievement responds to the strategy of reaching a larger area under cultivation by 2020, thus guaranteeing the necessary raw materials for the industry.
Production must arrive at the Ceballos complex and 14 small factories scattered throughout central Cuba.
The main crops are mango, guava, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, lemon, papaya and avocado, among other species, with the use of varieties such as MD-2 of pineapple.
In 2017, 3,700 tons of MD-2 pineapple were exported to Europe, especially to Spain, Italy and France, due to their exquisite qualities, as it is sweeter, juicier and larger than other varieties.
