Increased Pineapple Production in Ciego de Avila
Monday, September 10, 2018

Havana.- The agricultural sector in the eastern Cuban province of Ciego de Avila is cultivating more than 600 hectares of pineapple with a view to increasing production of that fruit.

Farmers are in charge of sowing, cultivating and harvesting a nutrient that is in great demand in Cuba and abroad, due to the quality of the fruit.

In the European market, the MD-2 variety, which reached that region in 2012 and is currently cultivated in 100 hectares of land, is preferred.

The MD-2 reported a yield of up to 88 tons per hectare, while the Spanish variety is around 25 tons in the same area.

Since 2013 to date, Ciego de Avila has exported more than 3,700 tons of the so-called MD-2 variety, which has been certified with the Global-GAP international standard, to Europe, Spain, Italy and France.
