Hotel Occupancy Decreases in Panama
Monday, September 10, 2018

Panama.- The hotel occupancy rate in Panama's tourist sector decreased 5.1 percent in the first six months of 2018, compared to the same period last year.

According to experts, this trend responds, among other factors, to a fall in tourist arrivals from Venezuela, as well as a depreciation of the US dollar in the exchange markets.

From January to June, 1.2 million foreign tourists arrived in Panama, accounting for a decrease of 2.8 percent with respect to 2017, when 1.3 million holidaymakers visited the country the first half of the year.

It is worth mentioning that 39 percent of international visitors come from South America, followed by North America (24.9 percent), Europe (16.2 percent) and Central America (10.8 percent).

In an effort to reactivate the sector, the government set up a tourist promotion fund of about 20 million dollars a year to promote the country's attractions.
