Hearing Research Continues in Eastern Cuba
Monday, November 5, 2018

Havana.- Cuban experts in audiology are advancing in a mass screening of infants to detection and treat hearing problems in an early stage.

The initiative is being carried out in the eastern province of Guantanamo and has already allowed the evaluation of 1,000 children, especially newborns.

The procedure is performed by a multidisciplinary team that works directly in the healthcare areas at the community level, where it evaluates the risk factors leading to hearing loss.

In case of detecting any medical conditions, the minors are studied in a deeper way, treated or rehabilitated, besides considering if a cochlear implant is required.

It is noteworthy that this device is provided free of charge by the State, as well as the surgical procedure for its implant and rehabilitation after the operation.
