Archaeological Values in Central Cuba |

Monday, November 19, 2018
Havana.- The town of Sagua la Grande, in central Cuba, has the Jumagua mogotes (rounded-top hills) among its main archaeological values.
According to experts, the region holds eight such elevations, which have a maximum height of 86 meters and a system that includes a dozen caverns.
They also stressed that this area was the settlement of aborigines, mainly on the heights, where caves abound.
Among the caverns, the one known as Cueva del Agua stands out in the southeast, where remains of fossils of several species from extinct Cuban fauna were found.
The discovery was also reported in a funeral site, where the remains of very old men were dug out, while centuries later, runaway slaves, who escaped from their owners, established their palenque (camps) in Cueva del Agua.
In this environment, legends emerged linking the place with pirates' hidden treasures.
