Cuba Withdraws from Brazil's More Doctors Program
Monday, November 19, 2018

Havana.- Cuban authorities from the Ministry of Public Health announced the country's withdrawal from the More Doctors Program in Brazil, where Cuban health experts had participated since 2013.

The decision responded to conditions set by Brazilian President-Elect Jair Bolsonaro regarding the Cuban physicians.

The announced modifications impose unacceptable conditions and breach the guarantees agreed upon since the beginning of the program, which were ratified in 2016.

Cuba participated in the program through the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), with the objective of holding positions that were not covered by doctors from Brazil or other nationalities.

In five years of work, nearly 20,000 Cuban medical workers attended to 113,359,000 patients in more than 3,600 municipalities.
