New Exports in Eastern Cuba
Monday, January 21, 2019

Havana.- The municipality of Baracoa, in eastern Cuba, is developing elver fishing as part of the strategy to increase exports.

In 2018, 1,000 kilograms of this species were captured, twice the amount planned, which were commercialized abroad by the Caribex company.

Specialists from the fishing sector pointed out that about 300 kilograms of elver were fished in the first 10 days of January.

The fry of the eel is caught in the mouths of rivers and is highly valued in the international market for its exquisite flavor, texture and nutritional values.

Elvers are caught in six rivers, including Toa, Duaba, Miel, Macaguani, Mata and Cay Güin, and nine other rivers will be added this year.
