New Oncological Technique in Eastern Cuba
Monday, January 21, 2019

Havana.- Professionals from the Oncology Hospital of Santiago de Cuba are performing the so-called radio-guided surgery of lymph nodes in cases of breast cancer.

This method reduces or prevents complications that axillary lymph node depletion poses for women and has been used until now to treat breast tumors.

For this purpose, a low-energy radioactive product is administered by means of an injection in the vicinity of the tumor, and with the guidance of a team, a selective biopsy of the so-called sentinel node is performed.

This way, doctors can detect if the tumor cells have invaded the axillary region, in which case the ganglia is completely removed.

If the result is negative, only the tumor is removed and the axilla is preserved, which will prevent female patients from restricting her daily tasks and it improves their quality of life.
