New Surgical Procedure against Cancer in Cuba
Monday, March 18, 2019

Havana.- Radio-guided surgery gains ground in the Cuban healthcare system, favoring procedures against cancer in the lymph nodes.

This method is applied in Villa Clara's Oncological Hospital and allows searching for lymph nodes affected or not by different neoplasms through an injection of medical-nuclear reagents.

In case of a positive diagnosis, the nodes are extracted using the corresponding surgical procedure to proceed to the axillary emptying, and if they are negative, the tests are suspended.

This evaluation is used in cases of breast tumors and can be used in surgery in the head and neck, oral cavity, tongue, larynx, and tumors in the cervix, endometrium and vulva, colon and lungs.

In each patient, doctors look for the so-called sentinel lymph node, which is considered the first lymphatic drainage from the tumor and if it is shown free of the disease, the results will also be negative in the rest.
