UN Lauds Cuban Public Healthcare System
Monday, July 15, 2019

Havana.- The United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) has recognized the Cuban healthcare system by highlighting the low rate of infant and maternal mortality on the Caribbean island.

Officials from the organization mentioned the positive impact of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, which contributes to achieving healthcare indicators of excellence.

The experts highlighted the coverage of the system, particularly in the case of pregnant women who, if they have any problems, they receive primary care at maternal homes.

Cuba is implementing an immunization program that has contributed to the eradication of nine diseases, including poliomyelitis, neonatal tetanus, malaria, pertussis, diphtheria, rubella and measles.

Cuba has also fulfilled, since 2015, the indicators that certified the country as the first nation in the world to eradicate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and congenital syphilis.
