Emblematic Theater Restored in Western Cuba
Monday, October 14, 2019

Havana.- The Sauto Theater, in the western city of Matanzas, will be reopened this month as a tribute to the 326th anniversary of that city.

The facility was inaugurated in 1863 in an area near the founding site of the city, which has been named the Athens of Cuba since the 19th century, due to its broad and sustained cultural movement.

The renowned theater was designed by Italian painter Daniel Dall'aglio, and it is an example of the neoclassical style in the city's urban environment.

The theater, which is similar to the Scala in Milan, has functioned as a multipurpose hall and has welcomed all the expressions of the performing arts and music.

In its history, it has staged performances by renowned artists like Alicia Alonso, Frank Fernandez, Sara Bernhardt, Anna Pavlova and Andres Segovia, among others.
