Coral Reefs in Mexico Damaged
Monday, October 14, 2019

Mexico.- Various areas of coral reefs in Mexico show the adverse effects of the so-called White Syndrome, which leads to their massive death.

According to experts, its expansion in the Mesoamerican reef is appreciated, which is approximately 1,000 kilometers and covers four countries in the region: Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.

In order to address the problem, an action plan was designed to improve the integrated management of the coastal zone, water and fishing practices.

Specialists estimate that two dozen species of coral have been infected and in some of them, there are no longer healthy specimens, such as column coral.

In this case, among the possible causes of the disease are the increase in sea temperature, sargassum, which muddles the water and prevents light from reaching the corals, chemical change in the water due to an increase in nutrients from wastewater and the increase in micro-plastics.
