Guantánamo More destinations
Province Guantánamo
Descripción

The province of Guantánamo, the most eastern of the greater one of the Antilles, stands out for its natural wealth in correspondence with the aboriginal name that holds, which means "land between the two rivers".,

As a relevant element in its geography was founded the first town in Cuba (Baracoa) by Diego Velasquez, which came to be in addition first capital and first bishop of the isle. In that area the natural landscape is complemented with a mountain flattened 575 meters height known as the Anvil of Baracoa, due to its similarity with that part used by the blacksmiths for its work. ,

Different arteries of water flow through the territory, including the Toa - considered the largest river of the island-, marked in your step by numerous waterfalls, the most famous known as The Saltadero with 17 meters of height. To that portion of the island arrived from Haiti many French colonists, which in a short time encouraged plantations of cocoa, areas of fruit trees and large farms in mountainous areas. In fact, it is just 80 kilometers from Haiti at their closest point through the Step of the Winds, close enough to see their lights on a clear night. ,

In Guantanamo there are a high number of immigrants from Jamaica so many constructions are similar to those of the French neighborhoods of New Orleans in the U.S. state of Louisiana. As singular element, in the province there are still vestiges of the indigenous settlements in the area of Charity of the Indians, in the municipality of Manuel Tames, this aspect of great cultural ethnic interest. Visitors are caught up in an environment full of memories of the colonial era, which include the famous Cross of the Parra, manufactured by the Spaniards during the first trip to America with precious woods of the place and it was used to officiate by Fray Bartolome De Las Casas. Linked to this, and has an extensive bay of bag ranked as the third on the surface at the global level, in both the mountainous area covers 75 per cent of the territory, where is located the Massif Sagua-Baracoa, one of the most extensive and attractions of the country. ,

To the north is located a narrow coastal strip with extensive coca fields cut by the mouth of many rivers, while to the south it extends a coastal area with presence of alluvial valleys between mountains where it is practiced the agricultural activity. Also, in the end this figure the plateau of Maisí with one of the systems of marine terraces best delineated at a planetary level, with numerous caves of great beauty. ,

Guantanamo is also the scene of artistic manifestations, as in the music of Changüí, the Nengón and Quiribá (native territory), Dance Tumba Francesa native of Haitian immigrants, as well as the art and literature. Some buildings of interest are the Parochial Church of Santa Catalina, the old Spanish barracks the Library Policarpo Pineda, who previously worked as the town hall; and the famous museum Salcines Palace, former residence of the remarkable local architect Leticio Salcines, which, with its eclectic style harmonic is the most representative building of the city.
