Description |
It was built in 1738, and its tower has the most extraordinary values of the colony. There is no doubt that the most significant element of the church is its tower (42 meters high). That is the second highest tower of the colonial times since the highest one is Iznaga de Trinidad tower (45 meters high). It is interesting to see in the Convent the two cloisters with galleries, which are connected by a genuine stair. One of them faces Teniente Rey Street, and is formed by Tuscan columns superimposed in three different levels with a full baroque style.
Was chosen by the British occupation troops in 1762 as the church for their religious services, and it also became the headquarters of a Masonic lodge. It was virtually abandoned from the 19th century on, until it was discovered to have exceptionally fine acoustics-and has been used as a concert hall for choral and chamber music ever since. |
