Cuba Produces AIDS Drugs
Monday, February 2, 2009

Havana.- Cuba's health system is promoting local production of the antiretroviral drugs administered to HIV-AIDS patients.

Some 4,000 Cuban patients are receiving that kind of therapy, which has a positive impact on their health.

According to experts, Cuban-made generic drugs have been administered to patients since 2001, and the country has reported a decrease in the AIDS mortality rate.

Studies show that people can live 25-35 years after being infected with HIV.

Cuba is among the world's top 14 countries with the lowest AIDS incidence, thanks to prevention programs and public health interventions.

Since 1985, Cuba has reported 10,600 HIV-AIDS cases, mainly men.
