Description |
To the west, center and south of the Isle of Youth we can find important ecological areas that are perfectly preserved: Sabana Los Indios-Itaboi, with soils of white siliceous sand, typical fauna and plants of a high degree of endemism.
You will also be able to find here one of the most notable endemic plants of the national territory: Palma Barrigona (Colpothrinax Wrightii) and an interesting endemic place, Eugenia Victorini, among others. This place is also the largest area in the country where parrots (Amazona Leucocephala) come to nest.
There are to the center some hills, among which, Sierra de la Cañada, 310 meters high, constitutes the climax. This is an area of high endemism of plants, mainly associated with forests of pines.
Ciénaga de Lanier, second important humid soil of the Cuban archipelago, and the calcareous plains of the south, with no surface rain drainage, are also places of interest. To the west of the plains you will find the hill of Caudal, made of marmoreal rocks, while its long coasts have white sand and beautiful hills enriched by the presence of several caves with prehistoric paintings, including those of Punta del Este (National Monument) with their preponderant position.
The sea bottoms of Punta Francés have an extraordinary beauty, while the keys of the east of the Isle of Youth have very attractive landscapes. The white sand beaches of Key Largo are especially beautiful, as well as the keys of Campos, Avalos and Rosario, which has a large population of iguanas (Cyclura Macleayi).
To the west, the keys of San Felipe constitute a small natural laboratory of great interest because of the series of evolution events of the fauna that have taken place there. Within the fauna of these isles, the most outstanding species are: the Jutía Enana de San Felipe (Capromys Sanfelipensis), the Carpintero Jabado (Centurus Superciliaris) and the Bobito Chico (Contopus Caribaeus Sanfelipensis). |
