Cuban Health System Boosts Rehabilitation

Treating neurological disorders, one of the main causes of disability and death in Cuba, is a major goal at medical facilities throughout the Caribbean Island.

State-of-the-art technology, highly qualified professionals and advanced treatments are combined to give an appropriate response to improve the people's quality of life on a case-by-case basis.

In Cuba's health system, specialized institutions treat patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, as well as those suffering from disorders that affect mobility or from degenerative diseases of the central nervous system.

In that regard, Cuba's neurology services have also succeeded in using several surgical procedures on patients whose mobility has been affected.

In order to undergo surgery to treat Parkinson's disease, patients must go through a screening process to determine the evolution of the ailment, invalidating symptoms and the patient's response to drugs.

Teams of professionals are in charge of assessing the patient's health in order to choose the most suitable treatment in each case.

Cuba's Neurological Restoration Program is a combination of pharmacological, surgical and rehabilitation methods, which are based on the capacity of the nervous system to recover.

The program allows doctors to compensate the existing affections and stimulate the structural and functional recuperation of nervous activity.

In addition to Parkinson's disease, the program benefits patients who have suffered cranial-encephalic traumatisms, traumatic lesions of the spinal cord, damage caused by the cerebral aging, Alzheimer's disease and sequels of cerebral anoxia.

It also benefits children suffering from brain paralysis and patients affected by neuro-muscular disorders or damaged peripheral nerves, among other ailments that hurt the nervous system.

The program consists of pharmacological treatments, intensive neurological rehabilitation and surgery, whenever it is necessary.

Doctors have vast experience in performing laparoscopic and sterotaxic surgery, using computerized planning and neuro-physiologic verification.

Surgical treatments involve a highly trained multidisciplinary team made up of neurologists, brain surgeons, psychiatrists, internists, psychologists, urologists, kinesiologists, speech and occupational therapists, and nurses.
