Cuba: Leisure Everywhere

The Cuban archipelago, a major tourist destination in the Caribbean region, offers a wide range of tourist options, other than traditional beach and sun choices.

Dozens of kilometers of coastline, with fine white sand and warm waters are excellent options for those who bet on Cuba to spend their vacations.

In eastern Cuba, tourists can visit the Gran Piedra (Large Rock) – the largest rock on earth according to the Guinness Book of Records. The majestic and imposing rock weighs 63,000 tons and is 1,220 meters above sea level.

The area was named after one of the most important geological values in Santiago de Cuba province: a huge volcanic rock that is 51 meters long, 25 meters high and 30 meters wide.

That is the highest point in the mountain range, where the Hotel La Gran Piedra is the only establishment in the country that accommodates guests at 1,225 meters above sea level and it is surrounded by a breathtakingly beautiful natural environment that is part of the Sierra Maestra Grand National Park.

One of the best dive sites is in western Cuba, on Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth), where extraordinarily-beautiful coral reefs run parallel to the islet's south coast, where another attraction is the Punta Francés National Marine Park

Diving enthusiasts can enjoy nautical activities in 56 dive sites, where they can watch large colonies of corals and sponges, in addition to underwater caves, tunnels and passageways.

Experts say the best dive sites in the region are Pared de Coral Negro, Túnel del Amor, Cueva Azul, El Pasaje Escondido, Cueva de los Sábalos, Piedra de Coral, El Salto, Ancla del Pirata, Paraíso de las Levisas and Pequeño Reino.

Golfers can go to the Varadero Golf Club, where they can enjoy pure air, exuberant vegetation and quietness, elements that are indispensable when practicing that sport.

The club is located on Peñas de San Bernardino, where millionaire Irenne Du Pont de Nemours built a nine-hole golf course in a private land of 180 hectares, a few meters from the coastline on one of the best beaches in the world.

Another major site is the Hemingway Marina, a sort of flag center for nautical activities and famous all over the world as sponsor of major international events, including regattas and fishing tournaments.

The most famous such event is the Ernest Hemingway International Marlin Fishing Tournament, named after the US Literature Nobel Prize winner.

Run by the group Cubanacán S.A., the Hemingway Marina can receive up to 400 boats and can provide onboard services to 200 yachts in its four five-meter-deep canals.
