Cuba: A Look at Tourism

The Cuban archipelago, which has a privileged location in the Caribbean region, offers unique tourist options that combine sun, beaches, culture, traditions, nature and history.

The warm waters surrounding Cuba give vacationers the chance to enjoy nautical activities all over the year.

The Caribbean Island also offers divers more than 70,000 square kilometers of insular platform and some 5,000 kilometers of coasts, which are bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Three dozen diving centers operate throughout the country, where tourists can take initiation courses and diving excursions in coral reefs and caverns, under strict international standards for that activity.

Therefore, getting closer to nature from a beach or city adds value to the tourist product, especially in Cuba, whose fauna is made up of 16,500 species and where more than 90 percent of zoological groups are endemic.

Cuba combines recreation and leisure with treatments to improve vacationers' quality of life, using treatments such as thalassotherapy, which takes advantage of the fact that the country is an island.

Thalassotherapy consists of using the marine environment (wind, water and climate) and other resources such as mud, sand and algae, with therapeutic ends.

In addition to international clinics, pharmacies, optician's shops and specialized centers in major tourist resorts, which play a major role in improving the people's quality of life, Cuba also offers a broad medical infrastructure to foreign visitors.

More than 280 hospitals, 400 polyclinics, 116 dental clinics and 1,500 medical posts make up the national health network to meet the most complex requirements of human health.

Cubans enjoy a good cup of coffee, a drink they enjoy as much as British people enjoy their tea.

The well-earned fame of Cuban tobacco attracts hundreds of tourists interested in smoking a Havana cigar, which result from a perfect combination of excellent soils and climate, as well as the farmers' expertise in cultivating that crop.

As a final touch, Cuban rum, which is considered a liqueur for great occasions, is produced from sugarcane and has become an irreplaceable companion in parties and meetings.

Cities characterized by well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, hotels that promote plastic arts, humankind's heritage sites, and celebrations and festivities all year around make up Cuba's tourist offers.
