Cuba: Options for Urban Tourism

The Cuban archipelago, which is rich in natural, historic and cultural values, is an ideal place to spend your vacations and enjoy a wide range of tourist options.

Dozens of kilometers of excellent beaches make up Cuba's traditional beach and sun offers at world-known resorts such as Varadero and Santa Lucía, just to mention some.

Cuba also offers urban tourism programs that are based on the country's Spanish-colonial heritage.

Many buildings that are Havana's landmarks, like the hotels Riviera and Nacional, are on the Malecón drive.

The Riviera, which is close to the Meliá Cohíba Hotel, provides entertainment options such as the legendary Copa Room Cabaret, where tourists can enjoy good Cuban music.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is also among the world's top ten Palace Hotels and was the only five-star establishment in the Caribbean region from the 1930s to the 1950s.

The Inglaterra Hotel is the oldest in Cuba. It was inaugurated on December 23, 1875, and its name honored the world's major power at the time, England. After being rebuilt in 1886, it became the world's best hotel.

The building, which was declared a National Monument and located in a busy area in the so-called Old Havana, has a neoclassic style in which original elements such as tiles from Alicante and railings from Seville, Spain, stand out.

In Ciego de Avila, vacationers can stay at the Morón Hotel, located in the outskirts of the city of the same name.

The Laguna de la Leche (Milk Lagoon) is three kilometers from the city of Ciego de Avila. It covers an area of 66 square kilometers, so it is the largest natural reservoir in Cuba.

The lagoon is a safe haven for pink flamingos and other aquatic birds, and it is an excellent place for regattas and carnivals.

In Holguín, the attractions of the province's north coast are complemented by the Pernik Hotel, which was inaugurated in 1980 and was named after the Bulgarian city of the same name. The hotel is close to downtown Holguín and Guardalavaca beach.

The Jagua Hotel, which is three kilometers from Cienfuegos's historic heart, is an excellent place for a comfortable stay while touring the city.

Cienfuegos is also famous for its singular nature. The centennial Botanic Gardens (built in 1901) covers an area of 97 hectares and holds the most complete collection of palms in the world.
