Cuba: Tourism and Economy

The Cuban economy, with the tourist industry among its main components, bets on the service activities in order to diversify the expansion options in an international environment where efficiency and quality are of paramount importance.

Precisely, the tourist sector is making progress in this sense, with strategies which give priority to improving the quality of services to the visitors and the expansion of the tourist infrastructure.

The Cuban hotel network is growing and unique coastal areas with fine sands and warm waters are combined with the cultural and historical values which reflect the traditions of the country.

Hotels like El Nacional, Plaza and Inglaterra are included among the most outstanding in Havana, and are combined with other lodging facilities located in Havana’s historic heart.

Cigar lovers can enjoy unique places like the Conde de Villanueva hotel or Los Frailes, a monastery-style facility; these options are complemented by the Palacio de San Miguel, an attractive offer for those who wish to enjoy culture and intimacy.

Thos who prefer nautical activities and diving can enjoy more than 70,000 kilometers of island shelf, with about 5,000 kilometers of coastline bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

More than 30 diving centers are available throughout the country, including facilities for beginners’ courses, as well as diving in coral reefs and caverns, always under the international standards for such activities.

Races and customs have melted through the centuries, creating a unique culture which shows African, indigenous, Chinese, French and, of course, Spanish features, and which constitutes an incomparable mixture of enormous richness.

Cuba has a unique natural richness distributed in more than 4,000 keys and islets which strongly contribute to different leisure options such as nature tourism and bird watching.

The Cuban avifauna is very diverse, with more than 350 species which can be found in the islets and keys which make up the archipelago and have a high endemic level.

Natural reserves, biosphere reserves, natural landscapes, natural parks and protected areas make up a large network of options characterized by their richness, excellent preservation and unique features which distinguish them in the region.

Cuba also has about 120 art galleries, antique shops and plastic arts halls, together with nearly 260 museums of the most varied themes and more than 80 theaters for various artistic manifestations.

The Cuban cultural and historical heritage, which has been accumulated for centuries since the arrival of the Spanish in the island, is benefited by preservation programs which favor the enjoyment of domestic and foreign visitors.
