Cuba: Tourism and Traditions in Havana

Havana, the main tourist destination in Cuba, concentrates important tourist attractions in its historic heart, supported by an old heritage which is actually present in the city.

The city´s historic heart, also known as Old Havana and declared as World´s Heritage Site by UNESCO, holds many of the museums, churches, cultural centers and buildings dating back to colony times, with about 33,000 constructions which were built in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Likewise, the company HABAGUANEX S.A., from the Office of the City´s Historian, offers a variety of tourist options at the hotels located in historic sites.

The company works in three main business directions including hotels, the gastronomic sector and stores, which are all supported by a potential of about two dozen lodging facilities and about a hundred gastronomic ones.

The emergence of small hotels, next to large ones with hundreds of rooms, is aimed at rescuing an old tradition from previous centuries when those small facilities were precisely in charge of meeting the lodging needs in the big cities.

In addition, HABAGUANEX offers bars and outdoor areas for its customers, alongside more than 200 stores and markets in the city´s historic heart.

The latest option is at the brewery built in the “Antiguo Almacén de la Madera y el Tabaco” (The Old Storehouse of Wood and Tobacco) where foreign and domestic visitors can enjoy an attractive offer.

The brewery, of Austrian technology, was built in the storehouse of a port terminal which was restored respecting its general structure and architecture.

In addition, the project includes the opening of the Casa de la Obrapía and the Museum of Colonial Art, as well as the reconstruction of the second floor of the San José Warehouse.

The company´s offer portfolio also includes the Bigote de Gato bar, “Casa del Queso” (Cheese House), “Bodegón Español” (The Spanish Inn) and “Bodegón Italiano” (The Italian Inn), with typical products from these European peninsulas.

In general, visitors are attracted to small hotels due to the numerous conditions they have to provide a good rest in their small but quiet and comfortable living rooms, next to inner patios full of vegetation and an occasional fountain of crystal clear waters.

The tourist activity in Havana´s historic heart is inserted in a comprehensive restoration project which ensures the participation of its citizens, thus generating new jobs and improving their life conditions.
