Cuba: The Tobacco Route

Cuba, a sun and beach destination par excellence in the Caribbean also has unique elements which contribute a quality touch to the tourist options in the country.

In this sense, Cuban cigars, regarded as the best cigars in the world, play an essential role.

The Cuban tobacco holds in its green leaves more than five years of history and it is closely related to Cuba's discovery by the Spanish.

Accidentally, the Spanish colonizers found one of the most important treasures of the island which became not only a key element for the Spanish nobility but also played an important role in African religious cults.

Although tobacco is currently grown in almost every Cuban province, the best lands for such crop are located in the western territory of Pinar del Río, mainly in the area of Vuelta Abajo which is regarded as the cradle of the best tobacco in the world.

The perfect combination of soil, climate and humidity produces a tobacco regarded by specialists as unique in the world, taking into account its aroma, color, texture and taste, which are all essential features to roll the famous Cuban cigars which are so much demanded by an exclusive clientele.

The Tobacco Route is a tourist product related to this crop which has more relevance in the westernmost Cuban province where agricultural traditions are revered.

The program is aimed at strengthening agri-tourism and includes tours through famous tobacco plantations, talks with farmers and even the option of staying in their houses.

The Pinar del Río plantations contribute almost all the wraps, used in the external covering of the cigar, which are subject to a process which may last a year and involve nearly 190 operations before ending in the hands of a cigar lover.

Thus, the famous Cuban cigar has earned a growing demand by customers who are interested in enjoying the perfect combination of excellent lands and climate with the centenarian experience of those who grow the aromatic plant.

Cuban cigar industry has close to four dozen brands and more than 700 vitolas of the highest quality to meet the needs of the most demanding clients.

Rolling a Cuban cigar represents an actual work of art for its maker, taking into account that the whole process, starting with the selection of the leaves according to their size, class and specific features for each cigar brand, is completely handmade.

According to specialists, the secret of a good cigar lies in a perfect rolling in which adequate proportions of different kinds of leaves are combined.
