Cuba: Nature's Paradise

The Cuban western province of Artemisa is one the country's strongholds in nature tourism, a leisure mode that gains prominence in the island, thanks to the location's leading-edge and unique attractions.

Soroa area, also called the rainbow of Cuba, is located at just 70 kilometers from the capital and stands out in Artemisia's attractions, hosting a beautiful 22 meters waterfall that invites visitors to cool out at any time of year.

One of the elevations surrounding the site, called hummocks by the rounded shape of the top, serves as a lookout point, with a view that allows us to contemplate landscapes of incomparable beauty, with numerous birds and plants, many of them endemic to the area.

The tourism in that site counts with the services of Villa Soroa, accompanied with a pleasant microclimate and valuable natural, historical and cultural resources, especially its diverse flora and fauna.

The offer includes horse riding and different modalities of trekking and tours to the ruins of French coffee plantations of the 19th century, the Bayate river and countryside community of El Brujito-La Comadre.

The surrounding scenery is also open to initiatives such as cycling and hiking, with walks along the banks of the river springs and unique baths in the so-called Poza del Amor.

Also, vacationers have access to a wide-range cuisine in the resort's restaurants, together with the special offer of mineral baths with hot water in public pools.

Among the wildlife of the region stands out one of the smallest frogs in the world, plus around 80 kinds of birds, many of them endemic to the country, particularly the Cuban trogon, symbol of the island .

However, its fame comes from due to an orchid garden with flowers from around the world deployed in a 35,000 square meters field, hosting more than 20,000 plants of 700 species.

This site also holds thousands of specimens of ferns and trees that make a unique landscape in Sierra del Rosario, which was declared a World's Biosphere Reserve.

The first varieties of that plant came to Soroa in 1948, imported by the then owner of the place – the wealthy Spanish Tomas Felipe Camacho – at that point considered the most experienced person in Cuba about the fascinating world of colors and fragrances.

The area is also home to the community of Las Terrazas, which shows a sustainable development of tourism with accommodations such as Moka Hotel, erected in San Juan Valley at the foot of Loma del Salón elevation, with a style that promotes respect for the flora.

With this establishment as starting point, tours to trails such as Serafina, Las Delicias and El Terracero are made, along with the chance to swim in the clear waters of San Juan and Bayate.

Also, there is Rancho Curujey, one of the most attractive and relaxing restaurants in the zone due to its location near the lake and facing the mountain, with an offer that is based on the authentic Cuban cuisine.

The history of coffee harvest in the area in the early 19th century is one of the highlights that vacationers enjoy in the Buenavista Restaurant, located in the ruins of a farm of the same name dedicated to the cultivation of that grain and founded by French immigrants.
